Police in Lyantonde District are hunting for a criminal gang suspected to have doused a 23 year old woman with chloroform before raping her.

The victim, whose identities are withheld for ethical reasons, is a resident of Kasaka Zone in Lyantonde Rural, Lyantonde District.

She was on Monday morning discovered by people who were going to work who found her lying unconscious on a shop verandah.

Residents claim that the victim had gone to Lyantonde town last night to join the rest of the locals in New Year celebrations with her friends but she never reported back home.

Bosco Matovu, the proprietor of a hardware shop at whose verandah the victim was dumped, says he was shocked on seeing the victim lying unconscious and he alerted police.

Lyantonde District Criminal Investigations Officer Martin Lubega says that the victim’s private parts had bruises indicating that she could have been raped before being abandoned near the shop.

He says that the suspects could have mixed chloroform with alcohol which she drunk before she was raped.

He adds that the victim has been taken to Lyantonde hospital for treatment as investigations into the matter continue.

In November, Moreen Ndagire, a 24 year old journalist working with Red Pepper, committed suicide weeks after she was reportedly gang-raped while on her way home from work.
