The dismissal of Dr James Ocita of the Department of Literature at Makerere University has affected operations of the department.

Dr Ocita, a literature scholar was dismissed by the institution’s Appointments Board in December for alleged willful insubordination and refusal to take lawful orders from the Vice Chancellor.

He was also accused of using slanderous, abusive or insulting language or behaviour against Prof. Mahmoud Mamdani, the Director of Makerere Institute of Social Research –MISR.

On Monday, a meeting of the Departmental Appointments and Promotions Committee observed that at the time of his dismissal, Dr Ocita had already been allocated a course to teach including supervision of graduate work, undergraduate literature projects and teaching the course Lit. 3208 Creative Writing Project and yet he is the only person that is specifically qualified to teach it.

“We are concerned that the dismissal of Dr James Ocita has greatly disorganized our work as a Department, as we did not have a contingency plan for handling the work that we had already allocated to him”.

“Ocita does his work with commitment and enthusiasm, meets deadline, and is always available to volunteer for additional tasks beyond the usual call of duty.  As a Department, we have never had a reason to complain about his performance,” reads a minute extract of committee meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Dr Benge Okot, the Head of Department, Prof. Dominica Dipio, Associate Prof. Susan Kiguli, Professor Abaas Kiyimba and Aloysius Kwitonda as its secretary.

The position of the department in which they expressed concern over their staff has been communicated to the Chairperson of the Staff Appeals Tribunal, George Omunyokol.

Dr Ocita was recently selected for a prestigious three-year fellowship at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study- STIAS in South Africa.
