Security at Makerere University has been heightened following a mysterious fire that broke out at the main building in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Officers from the Uganda Police Fire and rescue Services, forensic department, Criminal Intelligence Department, milliaty intelligence and Uganda Police have taken over the entire university.

At the university, all entrances are closed and people can only access the the institution using the main gate. Security is heavily deployed at every corner of the institution limiting entrance to only staff and journalists. None of the resident staff are being allowed to leave the premises as investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Some of the staff at the main entrance who tried to exist were told to disembark their vehicles and go back to their residence. "Sir where are you going. Can you please turn around," a female police officer was heard telling a female who identified herself as a resident member of staff.

The officer added that they have been given orders not to allow any body to leave the campus.

Grace Akullo, the director CID, who also rushed to the scene says investigations into the matter have begun. "We are instituting investigations and open to every possibility."

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni has arrived at the scene and she is holding a brief meeting with security and university management over the incident.
