Makerere to Host 2021 All Africa University Games

The event is slated for next month starting on 8-10 and it is part of the activities to celebrate the International Day of University sports.

Makerere University is set to host the Federation of African University Sports- FASU games.

The event is slated for next month starting on 8-10 and it is part of the activities to celebrate the International Day of University sports.  

Makerere University head of Sports and recreation Pennina Kabenge who doubles as the Vice President of FASU says that so far over 17 Universities have confirmed their participation in the games. The countries include Zimbabwe, South Africa, Libya and neighbours Kenya among others.

Some of the Universities that have already confirmed their participation include Mbarara University of Science and Technology, University of Benghazi, University of Tripoli, University of KwaZulu Nata, Makerere University, University of Johannesburg, Kenyatta University among others.

According to Kabenge, more than 400 student-athletes will compete in the games. She adds that unlike other editions they expect the Universities to have both teams of men and women.

The FASU games are a multi-purpose event that is organized by Universities in Africa. Uganda was awarded to host the Rugby and Tennis games in 2017 for the next three consecutive editions. They hosted the first event in 2019 and the University of Johannesburg emerged as the winner.

Kabenge revealed that other games including 3x3 Basketball will be hosted in Nairobi from 6 to 7 November as well as the Cross Country from 20th November 2021. 

Kabenge says that Makerere University teams have already embarked on preparations for the games.
