Construction of Makerere University Teaching Hospital starts next year, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has revealed. He says they are finalizing talks with government on the financing of the project.

In an interview with Uganda Radio Network, Prof. Nawangwe said they have a budget of US$400million where the plan is to have a 200 bed capacity facility that will sit on 30 acres of land at Katalemwa in Gayaza Wakiso district.

According to the plan, the facility will include out-patient and in-patient departments, theatres to conduct some of the major operations. In addition to those, there will also be space for recreational activities, staff quarters and a nursery school.

Among the challenges that this hospital is set to solve, Prof. Nawangwe says that increasingly Mulago National Referral hospital is failing to admit many students for internship given the increasing number of students studying medicine at other universities.

He is optimistic that the facility will go a long way in de-congesting Mulago National Referral Hospital where medical students on internship are currently being handled.
