Police in Zombo district
have arrested and detained a suspect in connection with the violent murder of 76
year old SAGE beneficiary.
Gilbert Ocircan a male
adult aged 47 years and resident of Pakada trading center, Abanga Sub County Zombo
district was arrested today by a team of police detectives from Paidha police
station after a tip off from one Obel Jangali of the same village.
According to information
obtained from the police in Zombo, the deceased, Basil Kermundu aged 76 years of
Jupaloza village Abanga Sub County in Zombo district went with others to
Pakada trading center on Thursday to collect their Social Assistance Grant for the Elderly-SAGE
At about 1500hours after
receiving his money, Kermundu and other friends went to rest at a nearby bar
until 8pm when he picked a boda boda to carry him home.
However, the yet unknown
boda boda reportedly diverted from the known route to Kermundu’s home and took
another direction, according to some eyewitnesses who saw him being carried.
Josephine Angucia the
police spokesperson for West Nile confirmed the incident and disclosed that
Kermundu’s body was found Friday morning at the home of his cousin.
Angucia revealed that the cousin to Kermundu upon hearing the sound of a motorcycle outside, came out to find
who the person could be but only to see a body dropped and the motorcycle rider
speed off in the night.
She said upon checking the
person dropped as the motorcycle rider sped off, it was found to be a lifeless

with deep cut on the forehead and its suspected that the assailants could have
used a blunt object to hit Kermundu on the head leading to his death,” said
Police has launched further
investigations in to the murder as interrogations continue with the suspect in
The body of Kermundu was
today taken to Paidha Health Center Three for postmortem examination.
Barely two weeks ago, six
people were killed and their bodies burnt by angry locals in Paidha after they
were accused of breaking in to a shop and robbing money and property worth
millions of shillings.
The incident has raised
fears among the elderly who are beneficiaries of SAGE in the district.
