A man is on the run after reportedly killing his wife in Rwot Obilo Village, Bungatira Sub County in the Gulu district.

Francis Abola, 27, reportedly hit his wife, Jennifer Ayot, 30, on the head using a hand hoe on Friday after a misunderstanding.

Martin Akamo Opwonya, the LCI Chairperson Rwot Obilo Village confirmed the report saying the couple had hosted a village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) party when they picked up a quarrel.

“I was informed that a man had killed his wife at the party. I quickly informed the police and other local leaders. Police went to the scene to prevent revenge attacks on the suspect’s family by the family of the deceased,” says Opwonya.

However, several houses were demolished, some banana stems were cut down and chickens were looted in a revenge attack by the family of the deceased.

Moses Ogwang, the Community Liaison Officer, says the suspect fled when people started making an alarm.

“Abola hit his wife on the head and killed her at around 10:00 am before taking off. I was informed of the incident around midnight,” says Ogwang.

Meanwhile, in Namisindwa District a 67-year-old man, Patrick Namutali, was found strangled to death. The motive behind the murder is alleged to be Namutali's relationship with a neighbouring widow, only identified as Sarah.

According to Simon Wefunya, a resident, Namutali they had been spending some nights at Sarah's home, sparking tensions in the community with other men who are also suspected to have been in love with her.

On Friday, Namutali's body was found with a twisted neck and critical injuries near Sarah's home. Locals rushed him to nearby Magale Health Center III, but he later died on the way before reaching the health centre.

Relatives of the deceased, armed with pangas, sticks, and bricks, attempted to vandalize Sarah's home and property but were dispersed by police after they fired warning shots.

The relatives accuse Sarah of being aware of the murder, although she denies any involvement.
