Justice Anthony Ojok Oyuku on Tuesday sentenced Joshua Jjumba alias Sulaiman Fred Kirabo a resident of Namayonjo village in Wabinyonyi Sub County in Nakasongola to life imprisonment after he convicted him of four counts of murder contrary to sections 188 and 189 of the penal code act.
The High Court in Nakasongola district has jailed a 28-year-old man to life imprisonment for murder.

The Prosecution led by Nakasongola State Attorney Angelo Wasswa Bengo told High Court sitting at Nakasongola prisons that on 5th Day of December 2019, Jjumba with malice aforethought unlawfully killed four people that include Amos Sekanza aged only seven years, Meseach Mawanda (10), Judith Adur (33) and Aloysius Matovu (93 years).

According to a brief statement of the offence, Jjumba picked a panga from his home and walked to Wabigalo village where he met Mawanda and beheaded him.  He went ahead and grabbed Sekanza from her mother and he beheaded him too.

Jjumba moved a short distance and found Adur carrying firewood before he also beheaded her.  Jjumba also beheaded Matovu whom he found peeling bananas in the kitchen. Jjumba later handed himself to Katugo Police checkpoint and he confessed how he killed the four people.

The prosecution tabled the post-mortem of the deceased, charge and caution statement of the statement, suspect identification parade report, and items recovered from the scene upon which the High Court based on to convict Jjumba.

However, Jjumba denied some of the confession statements he made before the Police.

The State Attorney Angelo Bengo Wasswa asked the Judge to sentence the convict to 200 years in jail to deter others from committing the same crime.

But the defence lawyer for the convict Edward Ndahura asked Court to grant Jjumba a lenient sentence saying he is young, a first offender and can be rehabilitated by a psychiatrist.

While delivering his sentence, Oyuku said that the offence was horrible which caused panic in seven districts including Nakasongola, Luwero, Masindi, Kampala, Apac and Amolator among others.

Ojok observed that the innocent lives including those of children were lost but the convict was not remorseful throughout the trial only to deny some parts of his confession statement which didn’t favour him.

Ojok explained that murder attracts a maximum sentence of death in worst crimes and the case is not in the category but close.

He said that he found it appropriate to sentence Jjumba to serve his entire life in jail.

Jjumba has 14 days to appeal the sentence.

During the search for Jjumba, Policemen shot dead a local musician Kevin Mutegesi also known as Sida Man in a possible mistaken identity.

Another resident believed to be mentally ill Fred Mbeta was shot dead by Police during an arrest at Namayonjo village after he was found with a panga and suspected by locals to be among the men who killed people at nearby Wabigalo village.
