Masaka Municipality has ordered for the closure of two playgrounds over poor hygiene and maintenance failure.

The two, Masaka Recreation grounds and Nyendo-Kasana playground have been operating without functioning toilet facilities. The facilities were closed in 2012 due to the failure by custodian authorities to clear water bills. In addition to poor sanitation, the fields no longer have grass.

Godfrey Kayemba Afaayo, the Mayor of Masaka Municipality says that they have asked Nyendo-Ssenyange division, the managers of Kasana play grounds and Kimanya-Kyabakuza division, the managers of the Recreation grounds to temporarily close them. This will also pave way for the physical planning unit to review their plans.

Area MP Mathias Mpuuga added that the two playgrounds were not fit for utilization. Mpuuga, who sponsors Masaka Municipality Cup, says many players in the tournament had already lodged  complaints on the poor state of the two sites.

Cue out: …we need it.”//

Musa Kamulu, a resident of Masaka has supported the temporally closure saying that with the perimeter walls being used as urinals and fecal matter strewn all over the place, the facilities are a big embarrassment to the municipality.

Ali Matovu, the LC3 Chairman of Kimanya-Kyabakuza division says the division does not have funds to conduct constant maintenance of the facility considering that the facility does not yield enough returns.
