The Democratic Alliance (TDA) has instituted committees to vet and scrutinize aspiring opposition candidates to be elected flag bearers ahead of 2016 general elections. On Friday, TDA national leaders oversaw the election of these committees from greater Masaka region at Hotel La Nova in Masaka municipality.
Those instituted are from Kalangala, Lwengo, Sembabule, Rakai, Lyantonde, Kalungu, Masaka and Bukomansimbi. Rehemah Namirembe, TDA candidates\' selection coordinator says the committees have been instituted at all levels.
Namirembe says the role of these committees is to investigate capacity of all aspiring opposition candidates before selection of the most popular among them, but basing on guidelines they have been given.

Mathias Mpuuga, the Member of Parliament for Masaka Municipality has welcomed the selection of these committees. He says opposition members have no choice but to embrace this arrangement if they really need regime change.

MP Susan Namaganda of Bukomansimbi says she is excited about this arrangement because it has been taken to the grassroots level. She says what killed the 2011 alliance is the failure by top leadership to involve local leaders.

Jim Jim Gyagenda, a DP member from Kalangala says this strategy will deliver victory for opposition at all levels if not abused.
The institution of these committees comes at a time when DP members in Bukomansimbi and Masaka district are bickering over candidature. In Masaka Municipality, some disgruntled supporters of John Kawanga, the former area MP have fronted their own candidate, Musoke Lule despite the fact that Masaka DP executive asked him to contest for LC5 Chair and leave Mathias Mpuuga for municipality MP.
