The Masaka Municipality Town Clerk Johnson Baryatuma Munono has rejected a petition by the Mayor Godfrey Kayemba Afayo seeking an investigation into the alleged sale of the Mayor’s Gardens. The gardens are located on Edward Avenue, plot 11-15.
In the petition, Kayemba noted that Masaka Municipality Council had stopped any further sale of council properties. This also applied to any approval of development plans in road reserves, opens spaces and any public land.
However, Kayemba said he was shocked to receive information that the Mayors garden is under risk of being taken or allocated.
Kayemba decried the possible loss of this land as the council had already allocated to the disputed plot to a contract for development and beautification at a cost of 17,555,000 million shillings. The contract was awarded in the 2011/2012 financial year and was on-going.
The petition, dated September 14, is addressed to the town clerk, copied to the Local Government Minister Adolf Mwesigye, Masaka Municipality Member of Parliament Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, RDC and the district chairperson.
However, Monono, the town clerk, dismissed the petition from the mayor seeking clarification on the matter by citing a conflict of interest.
He said that he could not investigate a matter that alleged he was involved in the sale of the disputed plot. He advised the mayor to raise the matter with the office of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG).
