Mbale Pastor, 10 Followers Arrested for Defying Ban on Public Gatherings

Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rodgers Taitika said that the group was congested in one room, yet the congregants had no masks which could lead to the spread of COVID-19.

Police in Mbale has arrested a pastor and 10 of his followers for allegedly convening to conduct prayers despite a ban on religious gatherings. The ban was one of the measures announced in March, to forestall the spread of coronavirus disease.

But Apostle Stanley Omita, of Miracle Embassy Ministries and Director of Billion Mind Institute was  found leading a service with 10 of his followers at Maluku ward Mbale municipality on Wednesday afternoon.    

Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rodgers Taitika said that they were tipped off by concerned residents who said that the group holding prayers all through the lockdown. Taitika said the group was congested in one room, yet the congregants had no masks which could lead to the spread of COVID-19.  He adds that Apostle Omita and his 10 followers are currently detained at Mbale central police station on tentative charges of attempted murder and disregarding Presidential directives.

In a similar incident, police are also holding a man for allegedly killing his aunt in a land dispute. The Suspect is Sam Wamboka, a resident of Bwikhonje village, Bwikhonje parish in Busano sub-county in Mbale district.
