Mbale Supermarkets Face Closure for Flouting COVID-19 Guidelines

According to the task force, major supermarkets in Mbale town have failed to adhere to the COVID-19 preventive guidelines such as social distancing and ensuring that their customers and staff wash hands and wear face masks. He listed Bam Shopping Centre, Abrah and Sombe Supermarket.

Mbale District COVID-19 task force has threatened to close all supermarkets in the municipality for failing to observe Standard Operating Procedures aimed at containing the spread of the Coronavirus Disease.

According to the task force, major supermarkets in Mbale town have failed to adhere to the COVID-19 preventive guidelines such as social distancing and ensuring that their customers and staff wash hands and wear face masks. He listed Bam Shopping Centre, Abrah and Sombe Supermarket. 

Mbale Deputy Resident District Commissioner Lillian Nakaweesi says that they have given the supermarkets a three-day ultimatum to enforce the Standard Operating Procedures or else face closure for violating the guidelines. Nakaweesi says that the supermarkets and the street vendors pose a big threat to the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Dr Jonathan Wangisi, the Mbale District Health Officer and member of the COVID-19 task force, says several people are flouting the guidelines despite several reminders. He says the task force has banned street vending since the vendors have congested the town, which is a threat to residents.

Yusuf Makweeta, the representative of Civil Society Organizations on the task force faults Mbale Municipal Council Law Enforcement teams for failing in their work of ensuring the guidelines are adhered to.

Benard Mujasi, the Mbale District Chairperson, says whoever fails to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures be stopped from working to save other people from infection.

The State Minister for ICT and National Guidance Peter Ogwang, who attended the Mbale District Force meeting on Saturday, asked the members to put in place a policy that ensures all guidelines are adhered to.
