Mbarara City leaders have asked the Resident City Commissioner to investigate the Mbarara City Engineer Merina Kekijusyo over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

The leaders are questioning why Kekijusyo and other technical staff from the engineering department have refused to appear before the committees to answer queries relating to substandard road works in the city.

The City speaker Bonny Tashobya Karushaya says that they have queries on most roads under construction that include Katamba Road, 5.3 km Nyakayojo, Karengye, Kishojwa roads, and Kiboroga road noting that the works committee was not given Bills of Quantities.

The councillors also accuse the engineering department of working in isolation without council approval. Other queries raised by the leaders include amending the road fund budget and recruiting three more staff without following the right procedures.

Mohamed Byansi, the city councillor representing Mbarara City South A says the entire office of the engineering department currently has no workers since most of them are either on leave or are on interdiction, which has affected service delivery.

He also says that the engineering department has failed to procure two batteries for the grader.

Eunice Asiimwe, the City Councilor representing workers says the heads of department have disrespected the council’s recommendations.  She also accuses the engineer of altering the road fund budget.

The City Engineer Merina Kekijusyo refused to comment referring the reporter to the City Clerk.

When contacted John Behagana Matama, the Mbarara City Clerk was hesitant to comment, on the matter. He, however, said that he will follow up on the complaints against the engineering department.

Cue out: ...explain to us."//
