Mbarara Municipality authorities have introduced a fine of 500,000 shillings for each vehicle parked on the pavements.

Parking on the pavements has been a serious concern in the Municipality which has caused destruction of manhole covers.

The most affected are roads constructed under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development- USMID project. They include Akiki-Nyabongo Road, McAllister Road, Constantino Lobo Road and Buremba Road.

Mbarara municipality Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi says that the fine will deter errant drivers who have failed to take heed to the numerous calls by the authorities.

Bright Muhumuza a resident of Mbarara Municipality says that the decision is long overdue. He

says that parking on the pavements has been a dangerous act that should have been fought right away when the roads were constructed.

Josephine Atuhaire another resident says that parking on pavements has been very dangerous to the pedestrians who use the walkways and pavements.

The covers which are made of concrete have been destroyed and most of the trenches are open or the covers have curved in as motorists park on the pavement.
