Muslims Petition Land Commission Over Mbarara Cemetery

The Muslims have been feuding with a local based businessman, Suleiman Tumusiime over the cemetery land on plot 68 along Mbarara-Masaka highway in Mbarara town.
A group of Muslims in Mbarara district have petitioned the Justice Catherine Bamugemereire led Land Commission through Uganda Muslim Supreme Council to intervene in the cemetery land wrangle.

The Muslims have been feuding with a local based businessman, Suleiman Tumusiime over the cemetery land on plot 68 along Mbarara-Masaka highway in Mbarara town.

The petitioners led by Adam Hamdan told the Commission that between 2010 and 2016, the former Secretary General of Mbarara Muslim District Muslim Council and the then Kadhi, Sheikh Ramadhan Hamisi fraudulently sold off the cemetery land to Tumusiime at between Shillings 300 and 500 million.

According to Hamdan, the Muslim community had owned the contested land since 1920.  They now want the Commission to intervene and ensure the businessman vacates the cemetery land.

The Commission is yet to pronounce itself on the matter. However, a source told URN that the petition is one of the issues the Commission intends to look into.

In October 2016, the Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Ramadhan Mubaje suspended Sheikh Ramadhan Hamisi, Yahaya Semugenzi and the treasurer, Rashid Famau over the same matter.

The Mufti intervened after Muslims rose up in protest against the officials for illegally selling off the cemetery land. The decision to suspend the officials was communicated by the Mbarara Muslim District Council Chairman, Sheikh Swalleh Adam.
