Severe meat shortage has hit Mbarara town, paralyzing businesses in most restaurants.
URN reporter in Mbarara says most restaurants in Mbarara town have scrapped meat off their menus, because of the shortfalls in meat supplies.
Some restaurant owners attributed the meat shortages to the recent ban on the movement and sale of cattle in Ntungamo, Isingiro, and Rakai among other districts. The ban came into force amid growing evidence that the highly-infectious foot and mouth virus was spreading through the countryside.
The ban has severely cut supply of meat and pushed the prices higher. The price of meat in Mbarara town has increased from 2,500 shillings to 3,000 shillings per kilogram
The Mbarara municipality meat inspector, Moses Birozyo, says the price of meat is expected to increase further because most abattoirs in Mbarara town have closed down due to inactivity.
