The Minister of Local Government, Tom Butime, has pledged to lobby for more university funding from the government.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the official opening of Uganda Martyrs University Fort Portal Branch on Thursday, Butime argued that universities serve a great role of educating people but receive little or no funding from government.

He added that private universities require a lot of money to maintain and government should not just look on as they struggle to operate.

Butime said that for all these universities to be able to meet their objectives in society, they require adequate funding from the government so that their owners do not turn them into money-making ventures, or get closed due to financial constraints.

Dr Pascal Kabura, the Principal of Uganda Martyrs University Fort Portal branch pledged to make the campus a leading center of innovations and engineering in the region. He said this will lead to production of graduates who are skilled and capable of solving real-life challenges.
