Police are under fire from the family of former Makerere University medical student Desire Mirembe for the alleged reluctance to arrest the prime suspect in her murder. Mathew Kirabo is wanted for murdering Mirembe on July 10, 2015, and dumping her body in Lugazi sugarcane plantations.

After his arrest, Kirabo reportedly confessed to the murder.  He was then charged before Jinja Chief Magistrate’s Court with murder and remanded to prison in Jinja. He was later granted bail, which enabled him to complete his Bachelor's degree in Medicine.

The case later moved to Mukono High Court on the instructions of the then Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine after the state complained that the crime had been committed under the Mukono jurisdiction. On October 6, the High Court in Mukono started hearing the case after 6 years.

Last week, Mukono High court issued an arrest warrant for the suspect after skipping several court hearings. On Monday Charles Twine, the Spokesperson of the Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID said that the suspect’s whereabouts are unknown, adding that they were also trying to trace him.

“We got the warrant of arrest from the court and we have been trying to pursue the whereabouts of the accused. This is a blow to the justice system, but we’re doing all that it takes to get him so that the hearing can continue,” Twine said.

Speaking to Journalists at Speke Hotel in Kampala on Tuesday morning, Mirembe’s family members led by her father, Emmanuel Musoke, a resident of Lukuli-Nanganda in Makindye division, says that it's painful for them that the suspect can’t be traced yet they have been pursuing justice for the last six years in vain.

“We have moved everywhere, we fought wars, trying to seek justice for Mirembe and recently the hearing of this case was resumed. We gained hope but now to our surprise, the suspect in the murder of our daughter has disappeared. We don’t even see efforts of tracing him by the authorities,” Musoke narrated.”

Ron Kigga, a councillor in Nsuwa zone in Makindye Division and a family friend wonders why the suspect who confessed to the murder was granted bail in the first place without any close monitoring.

Justine Kayuwa, an aunt to the deceased, says they were shocked by the court bail and now the information of disappearance is unbelievable to them. She says the disappearance means nothing but a clear indication that the suspect is a real murderer.
