The Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze has been attacked by an irate mob, accusing her of disorganising National Unity Platform-NUP elections in Mukono.

NUP supporters had gathered at Nakabago playground, adjacent to Nambooze’s home in Mukono central division to select a candidate who will represent Industrial Area-Mulago Ntaawo ward in the central division council.

Although NUP selected candidates through vetting in other parts of the country, the party decided to hold primaries in Mukono municipality after complaints that the vetting was marred by irregularities. The outcome of the process was challenged by all aspirants in the race, who accused Nambooze of influencing the committee decisions.

Subsequently, results from six electoral areas were cancelled and the NUP Municipal Registrar Richard Lugoloobi Kasirivu ordered by the secretariat to vet the candidates again. However, the fresh vetting did not yield results, because there was still disagreement on the chosen contender.

Lugoloobi says that based on this, Betty Nambooze, who is the NUP coordinator in Greater Mukono advised him to conduct an open election for the general public to decide their flag bearer.

However, as voters lined up at the back of their favourite candidates, Patience Lule and Nasif Musoke, Nambooze arrived at the election venue and ordered non-party members to leave the line. The directive triggered a bitter argument between the voters and Nambooze until she accepted all people who were gathered at the station to vote.

But in the process of vote counting, one of the contenders Nasif Musoke and his supporters attacked the presiding officer who is also the party municipal registrar Richard Lugoloobi Kasirivu accusing him of double-counting the voters. Lugoloobi was rescued by Nambooze’s bodyguards.

Nambooze immediately announced the cancellation of the exercise. However angry supporters from both sides demanded an instant declaration of the party flag bearer. The situation forced the MP and registrar to flee the ground as the crowd became rowdy.

As crowds gathered outside her home threatening to beat her up, Namboole called for talks between the two candidates and later declared Lule as the winner.

The move has left many supporters annoyed accusing Nambooze of masterminding the irregularities in the vetting process and usurping the powers of the registrar, to declare the winner.
