More than 20 animals were hacked to death on Sunday during ethnic clashes between Pugoda and Bura clan members in Orom sub county of Kitgum district. It all started after Alex Ongom, a member of Pugoda clan died following a fight with Quinto Achire from the Bura clan on Saturday at a drinking joint. It is alleged that Ongom hit Achire with a beer bottle on the head. He was rushed to Kitgum referral hospital where he was pronounced dead in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
The news of his death didn’t go down well with his clan members in Agora village in Lolia parish. They mobilized and raided the homes of the Bura clan members to avenge the death of their son. During the raid, the Pugoda clan members killed at least 20 goats and chicken. Denis Ochama, the Kitgum District Police Commander says officers from the Anti Stock Theft Unit stationed at the Sub County deployed just in time to prevent torching of huts and destruction of property.
Quirino Olum, the Orom Sub County LC 3 chairperson says elders from both clans convened a meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss compensation demands made by the Pugoda clan. He says Ongom was laid to rest on Monday afternoon. This is the third ethnic clash in less than 6 months in Kitgum district. Recently, Police successfully foiled two others ethnic clashes and arrested 17 people from Akwang Sub County over the clashes. Ochama has urged the public to avoid engaging in mob justice.
