Mother Arrested for Alleged Torture Of Child

The police in Luwero have arrested a woman for allegedly torturing her four year old child. 

Police rescued the child from Binyonyi zone in Luwero town where the mother, Aisha Nampima 27 had asked a friend for custody.

Nampima who is six months pregnant is a resident of Namasuba, Kampala city.

Salim Zimula Sserunkuma a human rights activist in Luwero town says that he received reports of torture from residents after they saw the child with burnt fingers and severe wounds around her body.

Zimula adds that he immediately alerted Luwero Child and Family Protection Unit which rescued the child and transferred her to Luwero Hospital and arrested Nampima who was preparing to return to Namasuba for her casual work.

Zimula says that the mother confessed to beating the child accusing her of stealing sauce at home which the victim denied.

The victim told URN reporter that she was burnt with a charcoal stove after failing to wash utensils and spending much time playing games.

Joyce Namigadde the Luwero District Probation Officer says that her office and Police are currently looking for a child care home where they will transfer the victim after treatment in the hospital until the investigations in the matter are completed.

Namigadde condemned the increasing cases of torture saying at least four cases are reported per week at her office.

Dr. Steven Magera, the Medical Superintendent of Luwero Hospital says that the victim was admitted to the emergency ward for treatment of the wounds.

On Friday, Police in Luwero arrested Gift Namyalo after she allegedly strangled to death her stepchild Moreen Nakirijja aged one month and three weeks.

In July this year, Police arrested William Lugemwa aged 45 years and his wife Jesca Payesu aged 35 years all residents of Kigavu village in Luwero sub county after they caused the death of their seven months old baby Immaculate Samanya during a fight.

In the same month, Stephen Musisi a resident of Bukomba village in Luwero sub county killed his wife Aisha Nalukenge Nagayi and other two children over a suspected domestic wrangle.

In 2022, Luwero district was ranked in the third position across the country after 51 cases of child torture and 432 child-related offenses.

Last year, Luwero Chief Magistrate's Court sentenced 22-year-old Dorothy Nabulime to 18 months for the torture of her two-year-old child.
