Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga has petitioned Masaka district council to reign in and stop what he called ongoing massive sale of assets in the municipality.

There is a public outcry over the sale of public assets and land in Masaka Municipality approved by Masaka District Land Board. Some of the assets include Kumbu forest reserve sold to Kampala University, Masaka Mayor's Gardens sold to businessman Moses Kaliisa, Children's Park, Masaka Bus Park, Masaka Public Library building, and Hotel Brovad Green belt leisure centre.

On Tuesday, Masaka Mayor Godfrey Kayemba and the deputy Town Clerk Edward Kiwanuka Gwavu noted that they sold these assets to raise funds to fulfill the budgetary obligations.

Town Clerk Kiwanuka noted that they want to raise money and use some of it to construct a City Hall. According to him, the municipality wants 1.5 billion Shillings to construct a city hall near Masaka Golf Course.

On Thursday, MP Mpuuga stormed Masaka district council and petitioned it to stop the sale of public assets. Mpuuga noted that the rate at which public land is being sold is alarming.

Mpuuga told the council that he fears if unchecked, ongoing sales will leave Masaka Municipality which clamors for a City Status, without any breathing space. He therefore asked the district council to intervene and stop what he calls illegal sale of public assets.

// Cue in: "There are so many…

Cue out: …is problematic."//

Achilles Mawanda, the Masaka district Council speaker told MP Mpuuga that they are going to intervene and address all those concerns.

Uganda Radio Network has learnt that the contract of Masaka district land board has expired but members continue in the office.

Jude Mbabaali, the Masaka District local council chairperson is expected to nominate another district land board.
