MP Zaake Arrested

On Thursday morning Zaake set off from Rubaga Hospital to Entebbe International Airport in an Ambulance belonging to Uganda Martyrs. He was accompanied by his lawyer Asuman Basalirwa, his family and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana.

Police has arrested the Member of Parliament for Mityana Municipality Francis Zaake.

Zaake was arrested from Entebbe Airport as he was planning to travel to India for treatment.

His arrest came after he spent five hours at the VIP Departure Lounge after he was blocked from travelling abroad. 

At 5:45 pm, Zaake was put into the AAR Ambulance that had brought him to Entebbe and with a lead police patrol car he was driven to Mulago.

Julius Katongole, one of the caretakers says that police officers led by the Head of Airport Security James Ruhweza asked the family to decide on which hospital Zaake should be taken.

"He is now in their hands. They have asked us to choose which hospital and we chose Mulago," Katongole says.

The police spokesperson Emilian Kayima confirmed Zaake's arrest in a statement issued on Thursday evening.

"He will be taken to Mulago for examination and/or further management, while under police custody as earlier intended and will be produced to court at an appropriate time," Kayima says.

Zaake has been hospitalised at Lubaga Hospital since 15th August 2018 two days after he was arrested from Arua District together with 33 other people including Members of Parliament.

Two days ago, the Director Criminal Investigation Grace Akullo wrote to Lubaga Hospital asking them to transfer Zaake to Mulago Hospital for examination but Zaake and his family refused.

On Thursday morning Zaake set off from Rubaga Hospital to Entebbe International Airport in an Ambulance belonging to Uganda Martyrs.  He was accompanied by his lawyer Asuman Basalirwa, his family and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana.

Zaake's family told URN that the flight tickets had been secured for specialized treatment in India after Rubaga hospital recommended a referral abroad.

On Wednesday, the Director Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID), Grace Akullo visited Rubaga and held a meeting with the Hospital Executive Director Dr Andrew Ssekitooleko. 

By the time of filing this report, Zaake accompanied by the police was on his way to Mulago Hospital.
