During the launch of the fundraising drive, Mukono Diocesan Bishop Enos Kitto Kagodo confirmed that the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for February 25, 2024. He encouraged the faithful to contribute towards this grand project, emphasizing its significance in glorifying God in the modern era. The initial stages involving artistic and architectural designs are already underway.

As part of the fundraising strategy, the diocese has called upon each baptized individual associated with them to contribute 20,000 Shillings towards this ambitious initiative. Herbart Batamye, Head of Laity, urged the Christian community to rally behind the cause and participate by making the stipulated contribution.

The goal is to garner support from 200,000 individuals by February of the upcoming year. However, within the diocese, there are dissenting voices expressing concerns over the decision to replace the existing structure.

Critics argue that the demolition of the old cathedral disregards its historical significance and the contributions made by the community over its 87 years of existence. Some advocate for the exploration of options to expand the current cathedral rather than opting for a complete replacement.
