Mukono Residents Demonstrate Over Power Blackout

The residents rampaged on Monday afternoon and blocked all roads connecting to Mukono municipality and Mukono market, saying the blackout has taken a huge toll on their businesses.

Residents of Kikooza village in Mukono municipality have staged a demonstration protesting the blackout in the area following a heavy down pour two days ago. 

Power has been off in Nabuti, Kikooza, Nasuti, Watoni and Kigombya villages. The residents rampaged on Monday afternoon and blocked all roads connecting to Mukono municipality and Mukono market, saying the blackout has taken a huge toll on their businesses.

They lit fire along Mukono-Jinja road prompting police led by the Mukono District Police Commander, Rogers Sseguya to swing into action and disperse them. 

"We have been without electricity for four days and our businesses are going down. We have not received any communication from the UMEME officials" said one of the businessmen at Watoni stage.

Another protester only identified as Godfrey, said they are recording loses and can't allow the situation to continue this way yet they pay for power.

The Mukono District Police Commander, Rogers Sseguya has called for calm, saying Umeme is trying to resolve the power problem. 

The Umeme Media Manager, Stephen Ilungole couldn't be reached for comment as his mobile was switched off.
