A man suspected to have shot his step father in the
chest with a bow and arrow in Yumbe district has committed suicide in Lobe Town
Council Police post cell.
Isaac Andabati a male adult, the deceased resident of
Mengere village Lobe Town council in Kei Sub County Yumbe district reportedly
committed suicide in the police cell in the early hours of Friday and the body
was found in the morning of Saturday.
Andabati was arrested by the police of Lobe Town
Council on Wednesday and detained at the cells for shooting his step father
with an arrow reportedly over a land disagreement.
He was charged with
attempted murder.
However, as investigations continued on Thursday,
Andabati was reportedly kept alone in the cells and police were shocked to find
his body hanging on the roof of the cells using his clothes at dusk on Friday.
Josephine Angucia the Police Spokesperson for W. Nile
confirmed the incident but said she is yet to get details from the police in
Yumbe since most of their phones are off.
“I heard of it but I don’t have details yet, the DPC,
OC CIID’s phones are off but I will try to get the details, without which I
cannot speak or explain much on the incident,” Angucia told URN on Sunday.
However, Swali Izule Rajab the Secretary for Security
Lobe Town Council confirmed the arrest of Andabati, who he said was in good
condition when he was taken for detention, adding that the body of the deceased
was handed to the relatives after they were briefed of what happened to him in
the cells.
Yumbe district Police Commander Charles Okoto and OC
CIID Richard Ozua, who was on duty in Moyo district then, has any denied any
knowledge on the incident but promised to follow up on it.
It’s not clear as to why the suspect was kept alone in
the cells from Wednesday and not forwarded to Yumbe CPS till he was found
hanging on the roof of the cell on Friday morning.
According to reports, several angry relatives of the
deceased attempted to storm Lobe Police post accusing the police of being
behind the death of their brother but some local leaders including the
Secretary for Security Lobe Town Council Swali Rajab intervened and calmed them down.
The body of Isaac Andabati was handed over for burial
on Friday late afternoon. Some unconfirmed reports indicate that because of the
remoteness of the area in Mingere village, the information has delayed to reach
Yumbe Central Police, while others said the Police at Lobe post tried to sit on
the matter but some locals took it upon themselves to expose the matter.
