President Yoweri Museveni has tasked boda boda riders to diversify their daily duties and invest in other income-generating ventures.

Meeting boda boda riders from different parts of Busoga at the Iganga district headquarters on Saturday, Museveni argued that relying on one source of income is no longer sustainable as the ever-dynamic world requires diversification for survival.

Museveni says that modernization has come through with the rationalization of transport systems where most inland travellers will prefer more railway systems and buses to motorcycles, which he says riders should fully prepare themselves for.

He argues that, rather than being stranded with the extinction of the boda boda sector, they ought to devise other means of survival, which will enable them to generate sustainable incomes.

Museveni further advised riders to formulate a zonal Sacco, which he can boost with seed capital, to supplement their existing incomes.  He says that such meaningful investments if well managed can outlive their existence all through to the next generation.

The Chairperson of boda-boda riders in Jinja City, Eria Musobya, challenged Museveni to investigate killings of boda-boda cyclists and theft of motorcycles.

"A number of our colleagues have been killed and their motorcycles are stolen yet they have inbuilt trackers from the motorcycle loan providers. This raises suspicion about the exact killers and only you  Mr. President can sanction security organs to expedite enquiries in these matters rather than ending at postmortem reports," he says.

Museveni said that other riders from Kampala raised similar claims and a report will be released.

Museveni however, says that he will fully study the report to expedite the enquiries and findings in equal measure as a means of deriving long-lasting solutions to this problem.
