President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to pay off all landowners whose land is encumbered by squatters in order to avert wrangles across the country.

Museveni told a campaign rally at Nakawuka parish in Wakiso district this afternoon that with an increase in land wrangles across the country, government will amend the objective of the Land Fund to create resources to buy out land from landowners.

He was responding to concerns by Wakiso Woman Member of Parliament Rosemary Nansubuga Sseninde, about persistent land clashes in the district.

Under the Land Fund provided for in the Land Act, tenants can, among other issues, borrow from the fund to buy or own land; government purchases land to resettle landless persons and also assist people to acquire titles.

Museveni said that this matter will be handled expeditiously and no evictions would be carried out, a commitment that drew cheers from crowds that had waited for him since morning.
