Police has arrested more than 10 people suspected of masterminding the attack in which another Muslim cleric Maj Mohammad Kiggundu was shot dead.

Major Kiggundu was assassinated by unknown assailants moving on a motorcycle together with his body guard Sergeant Stephen Kawuma in Masanafu, a Kampala Suburb about three weeks ago.

Among those arrested, is Ayub Nyende, the General Secretary of Jamat Dawa Salafiya, Umar Bascar Kamoga, Isa Twesigye and Ismail Kasibante. They were arrested from different places in Kampala and Wakiso.

Other suspects whose identities are still being withheld by police were arrested over the weekend and at the beginning of the week. They are all held at Nalufenya police in Jinja.

A source who is part of the investigations told Uganda Radio Network that operatives have been interrogating the recently arrested suspects as well as the Amir Ummah of the Tabliq sect of the Uganda Islamic community Sheikh Yahaya Ramathan Mwanje.

"The suspects we have in custody were pinned by their fellow suspects arrested earlier. We are still going for others," the source says.

Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi could not be reached for a confirmation on the arrest and update on the investigations progress while the Flying Squad Commander Herbert Muhangi declined to comment on the arrest.

"We are still investigating, I can't reveal anything further," Muhangi says.

Sheikh Mwanje was arrested a day after Major Kiggundu's assassination basing on an audio recording circulated on social media by the deceased three weeks before he was murdered.

In the audio clip, Kiggundu says Sheikh Mwanje accused him of being behind the arrest and prosecution of Sheikh Yunus Kamoga and other Muslims being charged of masterminding the murder of Muslim clerics.
