Nakasongola District Council Suspended Over Death of Former MP, LCIII Chairperson

The District Speaker Rogers Sande Bwanga said the planned district council that was slated for Friday at Migyera town hall has been postponed to 24th January.

The Nakasongola District Council has been suspended as the area mourns the sudden death of a former Woman member of Parliament and LCIII Chairperson.

On Thursday, Margaret Komuhangi the Former District Woman Member of Parliament for Nakasongola died in India where she was rushed after a long illness.

According to his brother Paul Kaliisa, the family and friends are still preparing to transport back the dead body for burial.

As the district was still trying to come to terms with the death of Komuhangi, the LCIII Chairperson of Kalungi sub county George Katusabe Kimata also died after a long illness.

Kimata who was elected in 2021 was passionate about fighting for the rights of tenants who are at risk of rampant evictions from land largely owned by absent landlords.

Kimata was also known for fighting for the rights of fishermen at Lake Kyoga where many are disappointed over the brutal operations of the Fisheries Protection Unit of Uganda Peoples' Defense Force. Kimata will be buried on Sunday. 

The District Speaker Rogers Sande Bwanga said the planned district council that was slated for Friday at Migyera town hall has been postponed to 24th January. 

"The purpose of cancellation of the council sitting is to enable district leadership and councillors to participate in burial arrangements of the Chairperson as well as mourning the MP. We shall convene next Friday where a motion will be introduced to honour their contributions ". Bwanga

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has also eulogized Komuhangi whom she described as a star performer in the tenth Parliament.

" I'm saddened to learn of the death of Hon. Margaret Komuhangi, former Woman MP Nakasongola District. We sat together on the committee of natural resources in the 10th Parliament where she was a star performer.

She was also a Chairperson of the Committee on Gender where she left a mark. My condolences go to the family and people of Nakasongola" Tayebwa said on X formerly Twitter.

Noah Mutebi the Nakasongola County Member of Parliament eulogized Komuhangi as a committed leader who fought hard to improve access to clean water, a good road network and health facilities using their resources as well as lobbying skills.

" I worked with her during the last term where we tried to lobby together for improvement of social services. She was passionate about gender equality and service delivery" Mutebi said.

Komuhangi aged served as District Woman MP on the National Resistance Movement ticket from 2001 - 2002 before her elections were successfully challenged by former MP Grace Tubwita.

Komuhangi bounced back in Parliament where she served from 2011 to 2021 before she was defeated in general elections.

In one week, Parliament has lost a sitting Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya, former Koboko MP Margaret Baba Diri, Former Buyaga County MP Ignatius Besisira and now Komuhangi
