Nawandala Health Center III, in Iganga District, has gone two years without electricity.

Specioza Naseta, a midwife at Nawandala health center III, says that the facility has been in a black-out since 2016 when the solar panels which were donated by the Kigulu North Member of Parliament, Fredrick Bwiino broke down and have not been repaired due to lack of funds.

The facility registers an average of 515 patients weekly.

Naseta says that due to lack of power, patients are asked to provide lanterns or candles to light up the facility.

Rachel Musenero, a nurse at the facility says that the health center III also suffers a challenge of drug stock out. She says that 500 doses of antimalarial drugs are supplied monthly to cater for the increasing number of malaria patients.

“On a monthly basis, we receive only 500 doses of Coartem for adults and 300 doses for the children yet an average of 400 malaria cases are registered weekly,” Musenero says.

Some of the patients who spoke on condition of anonymity said that they are forced to buy drugs from private clinics.
