The diversion of traffic to the newly commissioned suspended Source of Nile Bridge has taken a huge toll on business operators in Njeru municipality. The new suspended bridge was officially opened to traffic last week denying business operators along the old Owen falls bridge customers.

The most affected are Pump fuel stations, roadside fish vendors and carpenters. GP Global Pump fuel station is near Nile trading center, where the diversion to the Source of Nile Bridge starts. Patel Rajni, the manager GP Global Pump fuel station, says they have lost almost half of their sales since the new bridge was commissioned.

The pump fuel station also runs a supermarket.  "It would be better if the old bridge was left in operation so that we can sale fuel. As of now we are only making loses because all cars are using the new bridge and only customers who know the petrol stations are the ones that can branch,” he said.

He explains that prior to the commissioning of the new bridge, they were selling 5000 liters of fuel each day, but they are now selling 2000 liters.

Moses Kiirya, the Assistant Manager Petrol Nile, another pump stations located a few meters to the old bridge, says they are not making any sales ever since the new bridge started operating.

He says although the new bridge is a huge development in the area, it has come with a huge cost to business operators in the area. Kiirya says they were selling over 2000 liters of diesel a day but their sales have dropped to only 50 liters a day.

Several commercial houses near the old bridge have been abandoned. Even those that were earning a living along the old road by selling fish, cassava, roasted maize and newspapers have since moved to the new bridge.
