Nile Basin Initiative to Construct Hydro Electric Plant on River Kagera

The Nile Basin Initiative plans to construct a Hydro electric power plant on River Kagera.
According to NBI's water resources management and environment officer, engineer Emmanuel Olet, the proposed power plant will be able to supply power to Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda.
Olet says the 200 million dollar project, funded jointly by the World Bank and the African development Bank, would generate between 60-80 megawatts. He says work on the dam would begin in 2009 and is expected to end in 2011.
Olet said that NBI has not hired NOR Consult and SWEKO to design the project.
The project will be supervised by the Nile Equatorial lakes subsidiary Action Program [NELSAP] a subsidiary project of NBI.
