Butchers in Njeru Municipality, Mukono District have refused to
relocate to a new abattoir.
The abattoir was constructed at Bulyankuyege in Nyenga Division at
65 million shillings.
However, the butchers say that the municipal authorities did not
consult them before setting up the facility. They also argue that the slaughter
slab is small and the distance from Njeru Central to the abattoir is far.
Wasswa Mukooza, the Butcher Chairperson at Nakibizi says the abattoir was
poorly located in a valley which floods during rainy season.

Ramadan Kakembo, a butcher at Nile Market says that the slaughter slab was mixed
with weak concrete that cannot last for a month.
He also says that the animal paddocks must have areas for feeding water which
the contractor did not consider.
The Municipal Town Clerk Ocen says the delayed occupation of the
abattoir will put the lives of people in danger since majority of the meat sold
in Njeru is not inspected.

Yasin Kyazze, the Njeru Municipality Mayor notes that rejecting
the abattoir is costing the municipality revenue.
