It follows the suspension of the elections for the replacement of the outgoing Bishop, Rt. Rev. George Erwau. Bishop Erwau is expected to handover office this morning following his retirement after serving Soroti Diocese for nine years.
St. Peters Cathedral in Soroti Diocese where the Archbishop is expected to conduct prayers as he assumes powers until a new bishop for Soroti Diocese is appointed.
The Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali is expected to take over the direct control of Soroti Diocese later today. It follows the suspension of the elections for the replacement of the outgoing Bishop, Rt. Rev. George Erwau. Bishop Erwau is expected to handover office this morning following his retirement after serving Soroti Diocese for nine years.
He conducted a farewell party Church Uganda Teso Dioceses Planning and Development Office-CoU-TEDDO on Wednesday evening. But Bishop Erwau reportedly failed to submit the names of the nominees for his replacement to the office of the Archbishop in time.
The appointment committee of the Diocese had suggested the names of Rev Robert Olupot, the Soroti Diocesan Secretary and Rev Canon John Robert Angiro as possible replacements for Bishop Erwau. However, the House of Bishops reportedly suspended the polls during its recent retreat in Lweza.
"The House of Bishops suspended the election upon realizing that the names for the nominees had not been handed to the Archbishop" Bishop Edison Iregei, the Dean of the Province of Bishops told URN in a phone interview last month. He dismissed claims that the polls were deferred following petitions by some priests interested in the same seat.
In the absence of a new Bishop, the provincial council of church of Uganda mandates the Archbishop, Stanley Ntagali to take over the diocese. He can with consultations, appoint a caretaker until a new Bishop is elected. Preparations are in high gear in Soroti to receive Archbishop, Stanley Ntagali.
A member of the organizing committee told URN on condition of anonymity that cheerful Christians including youth and members of the mothers union are ready to welcome the Archbishop to Soroti at Awoja Bridge, about 20km from Soroti town where they will move in a convoy.
The Archbishop will conduct a mass at St. Peter's Cathedral at around 10:00am where he is also expected to receive the most treasured Biblical shepherd's rod from the outgoing Bishop.
