According to
our reporter in Ntungamo, the incident happened around 2 a.m., during the
transportation of voting materials to Rubaare Sub County from the Electoral
Commission offices in Ntungamo district.
Our reporter explains that EC officials
decided to use the volunteers after the trucks carrying the materials failed to
navigate through the road connecting to Rubaare sub-county headquarters because
of the ongoing works.
He explained
that the road is filled with heaps of marram, which makes it difficult for
trucks to drive through. The missing ballot box contained the voter’s register,
the presidential and parliamentary ballots for Kacerere polling station.
Police
have since picked up a political assistant to Naomi Kabasharira, an independent
candidate for the Rushenyi Parliamentary seat in connection to the theft of the
ballot box. The theft of
the ballot box led to the late delivery of voting materials to other polling
stations.
Four candidates are vying for the Rushenyi Parliamentary seat. The
others are the incumbent and National Resistance Movement-NRM party candidate,
Mwesigwa Rukutana, the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate, Dr Benjamin
Binyaruhanga-FDC and Elick Kahumuza, an independent.
There are
68,000 registered voters in Rushenyi County.
