The Omoro District Speaker, Damasco Odongo and six others yet to be identified have been arrested after being found with mercury detection equipment  in Ajan Village, Lamola Parish, in Odek Sub – County in Omoro.

They were arrested by the local community while on their way to a so-called Mercury  detection mission at Awere Hill in Odek Sub –County.

Samuel Owor, the Chairman of Ajan Village told URN in an interview that Odongo who was leading six other men were approaching Awere Hill and was in possession of a so-called mineral detector machine in a small box.

Owor says when the locals inquired where Odongo and his colleagues were going, they said they were going to detect mercury in Awere Hill, something that prompted the locals to arrest them.

Awere Hill is where it is believed that the Lord’s Resistance Army Rebel Commander Joseph Kony got his divine powers to go to the bush to rebel against the government in the 1980s. The hill has a number of myths and tales due to its purported miraculous powers. It is however not clear whether there are mineral deposits beneath Awere Hill, or the suspects were under illusion.

According Owor, the seven men were paraded before the Ajan Clan Leaders who later handed them over to police in Odek Police Post for further inquiries and investigations.

Richard Okello Labongo, the Odek Sub –County Chairman told URN in an interview that Odongo went on ground with a group six men believed to have travelled from Kampala with heavy machineries for digging the ground without the knowledge or authorization of the Sub –County leaders.

When contacted for a comment, Hassan Mugerwa Katumba, the Omoro District Police Commander confirmed the arrest but did not disclose its details saying he is yet to be briefed by the officers who were on ground.
