One Arrested Over Botched Robbery of UGX28M

Police in Old Kampala have arrested one man and hunting for another over a failed robbery of 28.6 million shillings at a Chinese store in Kisenyi II Parish, in Kampala. The suspect has been identified as Ronald Ongom while the one on the run has been named as Kaboyi a casual laborer at Kasajja building in Kisenyi.

Kaboyi, according to police struck a deal with Ongom to rob money which a Chinese trader, Sun Hengde, often locked inside the store in the evening hours. Kaboyi entered the store at around 8 pm alongside Ongom but the latter was locked inside by unsuspecting Hengde. The duo planned to varnish with the money alongside other valuables in the wee hours of the night.

But Ongom ran out of luck when he failed to locate the spare keys inside the store after he had packed 28.6 million shillings in the bag. “I wanted to move out but I got stuck. I called Kaboyi who brought for me a hammer. But when I was hitting the door locks, people in the nearby lodge heard and made an alarm,” Ongom is quoted by detectives.

Police have established that Kaboyi pushed the hammer through one of the small openings so that Ongom could break the ventilators and move out with their loot. In the process of breaking the ventilators, locals at a nearby lodge heard the sounds and quickly surrounded the store.

According to Ongom, they had also planned to steal a translator gadget, Wi-Fi system DVDR, Disk Drive, three extension cables, and other items in the same night. By the time Hengde arrived at the store, Ongom had already been arrested by locals.

Patrick Onyango the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson confirmed the botched robbery incident. “After getting the loot, he wanted to get out but everywhere was locked. He rang Kaboyi who sent him a harmer so that he broke the ventilator. As he tried to get out, he was heard by people at the Lodge who responded,” Onyango said.

Hengde deals in bales of clothes and the case was registered vid ref 03/27/02/2024 of USAFI police station. The store and shop are located at Kasajja building where Kaboyi works as a casual labourer.

Kaboyi, according to the police is a resident of Nansana who also doubles as a bodaboda rider without a permanent stage. Hengde opened a case that is referenced on 03/27/24. The case is being investigated by ASP Kyankaga who picked Ongom at the scene.

“The money worth 28,637,800 shillings is exhibited. Breaking implements that's the hammer and the chisel were recovered from Ongomu's bag,” police said.
