One Dead, Four Injured in Elegu Shooting

One person has been killed and four others injured during a robbery in Elegu Town Council in Amuru district.  The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Herbert Ayesigye, a trader in Elegu town council.

Ayesigye died shortly after being admitted at Gulu Independent Hospital following a raid at on his home on Saturday night. Peter Wasswa, the officer in charge of Elegu Police post, says unidentified thugs raided the deceased’s home and shot him using a sub machine gun.

They took off towards Unyama River at the Uganda-South Sudan border. Jimmy Onkegiu, the Officer in charge of Crime Intelligence and Investigation in Elegu, says Ayesigye suffered two gunshots in the stomach. Police have recovered 16 cartridges of an SMG rifle from the scene of crime.

The attack also injured Allen Nayebare, 21, Marion Musimenta, 25, Eva Kyasimire, 19 and Charles Lojum, 25, all residents of Elegu Town Council. The Aswa River Region Police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, says the gunshot victims are receiving treatment at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor while others are in Gulu Independent Hospital.

Proliferation of small arms and light weapons pose a grave danger to security of the people along the Uganda-South Sudan border. Weapons are used for robbery around Elegu–Nimule, while in Lamwo and Kitgum districts, such weapons are used for cattle raids.
