Fire Razes Over 15 Spare-Part Shops in Mbale Garage

Motor vehicle spare parts dealers in Mbale city garage are counting losses following a fire outbreak that gutted part of their shops on Wednesday morning.    

According to police, the fire gutted at least 16 spare part shops destroying merchandise worth millions of Shillings. Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, says that the first started around 2:00 am.

 

He says that it took the intervention of the Police fire and rescue team to stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the garage.

According to Taitika, preliminary findings indicate that the fire could have started from a burning charcoal stove, which was left unattended in one of the food kiosks.

He says that the fire started shortly after the return of electricity that was off.   He says that the most affected are shops that have been motor vehicle spare parts and lubricants.

Muhammad Kyakulaga, the Defense Secretary of St. Andrews cell also attributes the fire outbreak to electricity. 

He applauded the Police fire and rescue team for the expeditious response, which managed to stop the fire from causing further damage.

Oliver Nalukenge, a businesswoman in Mbale garage whose two shops were razed down, says that she has lost goods worth more than Shillings 12 million.
