Oyam Mob Sets Suspected Cattle Thief to Death

According to Olak, the mob dragged Okello to a nearby bush, tied him on the motorcycle he was riding and set him ablaze, and that be burnt to death.

Uknown people have intercepted a suspected cattle thief in Kongo Trading Center in Minakulu sub-county in Oyam district and set him ablaze. The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Walter Okello, a resident of Alao Village, Minakulu Sub –County in Oyam district.

He was carrying a white female calf on a motorcycle registration number UFE 055/U when the mob members intercepted him on Wednesday afternoon and burnt him to death. Wilbert Obak, the Kongo Village Defense Secretary, says that the mob intercepted Okello and interrogated him about the calf but he couldn't justify ownership.

According to Olak, the mob dragged Okello to a nearby bush, tied him on the motorcycle he was riding and set him ablaze. Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, says that police visited the crime scene and recovered the burnt motorcycle, the calf, and other exhibits.

He says that they took the deceased's body to Anyeke Health Center IV for postmortem before handing it over to his relatives for burial. Okema explains that police have started tracking the suspects for prosecution. Okello is the third victim of mob action in the North Kyoga Region this month. 

The other victims are David Osama Otanga, 55, a resident of Amolatar District who was allegedly murdered on February 17th, 2022 on allegations of cattle theft and Julius Otim Koi Koi, 25, a resident of Oyam district who was killed on February 16th, 2022 on allegation of cattle theft as well. Murder is contrary to section 188 of the Penal Code Act and any person convicted of the offence is sentenced to death.
