Polls for Sub County Chairperson and Councillors in Palabek Abera Sub County in Lamwo district on Wednesday delayed over missing and inadequate ballots in some polling stations.

At Agwata Dog Tangi polling station, voting that was slated to commence at 7 was later delayed after it was realized that ballot papers meant for female council representatives for Agwata and Cubu parish were missing in the ballot box.

The sub-county polling supervisor Marco Lakica also says Agwata polling station received only 500 ballot papers for both Chairpersons and directly elected councillors instead of 683 registered voters at the polling stations. The inadequate ballots angered voters who insisted that voting be halted until investigations and an audit is launched into the whereabouts of the missing ballot papers.

Peter Opoka, a voter raised suspicion that the missing ballot papers could be a ploy of possible vote-rigging and possibilities that the ballot papers could have been plucked out and are being pre-ticked in favour of some candidates.

The Lamwo District Returning Officer Samuel Olet says they were not aware of the missing ballot papers but attributed the anomaly to possible glitches during the packing process at the commission headquarters.

Olet, however, says the anomaly could not stop the voting from proceeding since records from previous elections indicate that voters participating in the affected polling stations was dwindling and could not exceed even the available 500 ballot papers.

However after numerous consultations and dialogues amidst voters, polling officials, elections observers and other stakeholders the voters accepted voting that commenced at 12:49 pm with precautions that the anomaly is recorded and results not tampered with.
