Security agencies in Otuke are still hunting for suspected Karamojong cattle rustlers who raided animals from the district. On Saturday night, the raiders stormed Olilim, Apape, and Got- Ojwang villages in Olilim sub-county where they made away with 52 head of cattle.

Using bows and arrows, the raiders also injured one Tony Ogwal, a resident of Got- Ojwang who tried to intervene during the raid. This is the first time this year that cattle rustlers are invading the district and stealing animals.

Jillian Akullo, the Otuke Resident District Commissioner, says that security with support from the local leaders is trailing the raiders in an attempt to recover the stolen animals. She wondered where the cattle rustlers are getting the market for the stolen as well as firearms despite the disarmament program in Karamoja.

Charles Odongo, a resident of Got- Ojwang is worried that the cattle rustlers might force them to leave their homes the same way they did years ago.

Benjamin Otim, another resident wondered why the cattle raiders were not intercepted by soldiers at Alir barracks, saying the government must ensure that the karamojongs remain in their area.

Akullo says that the district is considering establishing more detaches, especially at the sub-counties bordering Abim and Agago Districts in an attempt to intercept the raiders as they come in. So far UPDF has deployed at the barracks at Alir, which initially hosted the Anti- Stock Theft Unit

(ASTU).

James Shilaku, the Abim Resident District Commissioner says that they will also be deploying security personnel along the Abim-Otuke border to ensure that the rustlers do not cross through his district.

“Now the road bordering Otuke has been worked on so the movement of troops will be so easy in case there is another case of a raid by the Karamojong even if it is just a rumor. We shall deploy at our border to ensure peace," he said.

For a long time, the Karamojong herdsmen would visit Otuke and its neighboring districts in search of water and pasture for their animals. However, since 2021, they have been stealing animals from the residents.
