Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, stated that unknown assailants attacked the home of the elderly couple on Saturday night, using machetes to inflict fatal injuries.
Police in Kazo district are holding a man on suspicion of
murdering an elderly couple. The suspect has been identified as Godwin
Bainomugisha, a resident of Buremba Central Cell. The victims, John Baryahebwa,
96, and his wife Zeldah Kenyangi, 86, were residents of Buremba Central Cell in
Buremba Town Council.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, stated
that unknown assailants attacked the home of the elderly couple on Saturday
night, using machetes to inflict fatal injuries. According to Kasasira,
preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased couple had ongoing
domestic disputes with their son related to a land issue.
Kasasira further explained that a police dog was deployed to the
scene, leading to the arrest of Bainomugisha, who is in custody at Kazo Central
Police Station to assist in the ongoing murder investigation. Bruno
Katebarirwe, a resident of Buremba, revealed that the deceased couple had been
entangled in a lengthy legal battle over land for over two decades.
He believes
that their death is a result of this unresolved land dispute. The bodies of the
deceased were transferred to Kazo Health Center IV for postmortem examinations,
while inquiries into the matter are still ongoing.
