Police has used teargas to disperse a Democratic Party meeting at Kasana Luweero Diocese in Luweero town.  More than 40 DP bloc leaders had converged at Fatima Sharing Hall at Kasana Luweero Diocese to unveil the organizing committee for their rally scheduled for August 8th at Kasana playgrounds.

The rally is expected to attracted National DP Leaders, Robert Kyagulanyi, the Kyadondo East Member of parliament and the newly appointed DP National mobiliser, Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleon.

During the meeting, former presidential candidate, Sam Lubega Mukaaku unveiled the team led by the former Luweero Woman Member of parliament, Brenda Nabukenya, Luweero DP Chairperson, Erasto Kibirango, the former Luweero town council LC 3 Chairperson, Charles Ssebyala and George Ssemakula, the aspirant Katikamu South parliamentary aspirants among others.

Mukaaku explained that the rally is intended to unite DP party members and mobilise support for their candidates. However, anti-riot police led by the Luweero District Police Commander, Ahmed Musakana stormed the venue as the meeting was still ongoing and asked the DP members to vacate the hall with immediate effect.

Musakana told the DP officials that there meeting was illegal since they didn’t seek permission from police to the chagrin of the members. They argued that there was no need to seek police permission since they were holding an internal party meeting.

Several DP officials led by Sulaiman Kidandala, the former Deputy KCCA Lord Mayor and Luweero DP Chairperson, Erasto Kibirango pleaded with Musakana to allow their meeting to continue since they were peaceful in vain.

Musakana ordered Anti-riot Police to fire teargas in the hall to disperse the DP members forcing some of them to jump out through windows and others scampered for the exit. The scuffle paralysed studies at St. Jude primary school that is close to sharing hall.

Musakana said they will only allow parties meetings where police is informed. Brenda Nabukenya, the former Luweero Woman MP and Charles Ssebyala, the former Luweero Town Council LC 3 Chairperson have condemned police for acting contrary to the law.

They also accused Musakana of working in favor of the ruling National Resistance Movement through suppressing opposition meetings.
