Police officer Arrested after Shooting at Soccer Fans in Kisoro

The bar was hosting scores of sports fans who were watching a Champions League game between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germaine PSG. A police officer has been arrested in Kisoro district on allegations of attempted murder. The officer, identified as Christopher Kagabo, attached to Nyakabande Police Post is alleged to have shot and injured one, Lawrence Uzabariho, a resident of Gisorora.

Kisoro District Police Commander Charles Okotto says that the incident occurred last night when Kagabo, entered one of the bars in in Nyagakoro Trading Centre, during a foot patrol, and demanded an explanation as to why it was operating after 10 p.m.

In the process, Kagabo fired live bullets and injured Uzabariho in the stomach. Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate says that victim was rushed to St Francis Hospital Mutolere while in a critical condition, with a bullet stuck in his back.

Similar events have previously been recorded across the region in the recent past.

On February 6 2019, Anacyed Byaruhanga, a police constable attached to the Counter Terrorism Police in Kanungu district shot and killed a one Abdul Hakim Tukamushaba as he attempted to access Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge in Rubuguri Town council, Kisoro district, where Byaruhanga had been deployed as a guard.

In July 2018, Police Constable Paul Mwanga, an officer attached to the Field Force Unit, shot to death Stephen Ntagahorero and injured Desiderio Munyaneza and Ponsiano Maniragaba, all residents of Gikoro village in Nyakabande Sub County, Kisoro district.

Mwanga together with Denis Adii, a Canine handler and Detective Amos Mwanamwolho, had gone to Gikoro village to track some thieves with the aid of sniffer dogs. But chaos erupted when locals attempted to beat them after the sniffer dog failed to trace the thieves prompting them to shoot in the crowd.

Last year in April, Police-constable Offen Ogondua was arrested for unlawfully shooting and injuring one Emmanuel Twesigye, a student of Muhabura Shine Secondary School. The shooting occurred during a friendly football match between Muhabura Shine Secondary School and Mutolere High School at Saza grounds in Kisoro Municipality.

Ogondua shot Twesigye on the right leg while saving the life of Derrick Mugabi, a student of Mutolere High School who was being assaulted by students from a rival school.
