Kamuli territorial police have arrested Sgt. Jimmy Etapu from Balawoli Police Post for allegedly causing the death of Edirisa Kawongolo, a resident of Butalage II, Kawaaga, Balawoli Town Council.
According to Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North police spokesperson, preliminary investigations indicate that on February 17, 2025, at around 4:00 AM, Sgt. Etapu booked out to arrest Joseph Badaaza, who was accused of assault in Butalage II.
Kasadha stated that during the arrest, the suspect raised an alarm, triggering a scuffle as bystanders attempted to intervene. In response, the officer discharged two bullets in what he claimed was self-defense. A stray bullet struck Kawongolo, the suspect’s brother.
Kawongolo was rushed to Kamuli General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A team of officers, led by the Officer in Charge (OC) of the station, responded to the scene. Investigations are ongoing, and a postmortem examination is yet to be conducted.
