A police officer arrested in connection to the death of a police constable Gideon Mbirire has been released on bond.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said that Yakub Wakasada was released on Tuesday because his co-accused are still on the run.

Wakasada was arrested on March 24 on accusations of flouting police operation procedures.

It’s alleged that Wakasada with soldiers attached to Kawempe Internal Security Organisation (ISO) arrested Mbirire on allegations of hiring out his gun to criminals. He was then tortured to death.

Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, a fortnight said that Mbirire was tortured inside the office of Kawempe division intelligence officer and taken to Kawempe police station after his condition worsened.

“When he became weak, the soldiers took him to Kawempe police station but he was rejected. We don’t admit tortured, ill and wounded suspects,” Enanga said.

On April 1, Uganda Police Force (UPF) wrote to Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and Kawempe military detach to arrest soldiers accused of torturing Mbirire to death.

“These suspects are still on the run and as police, we have notified our sister agencies to help us in tracing for them. We expect our sister agencies to avail details of these suspects,” CP Enanga said.

According to the police, the suspects on the run include Ifad Kawagga who allegedly drove the Pickup that dumped Mbirire’s body to Mulago mortuary.

Others suspects include Bwaise Parish Intelligence Security Officer (PISO), Muhammad Kimbugwe and Lt Swarehe Begumisa who is said to have commanded the operation in which the Mbiire was arrested.
