Police Officer Shoots One Dead in Kabale

Residents of Kigongi ward in Kabale municipality were last evening treated with grief when a police officer shot a 15-year-old boy to death.

The incident occurred at around 7 pm opposite Voice of Kigezi building when a police officer identified as John Bosco Monday, shot Ronald Taremwa, a senior three student at Rock High School. One other person identified as Medard Tukwasibwe was injured.

Monday, who was riding a Motorcycle registration number UP 1399 lost control and knocked a boda-boda cyclist. However, according to eyewitness accounts, the police officer opened fire when he was asked to repair the damaged motorcycle.

One eyewitness Osbert Ariho says that both the dead and the injured were not part of the scuffle. The shooting triggered protests forcing police to use tear gas and live bullets to disperse the angry residents.

The causality was rushed to Kabale regional referral hospital and the body of the deceased was taken to the same hospital for postmortem.

Kigezi Region Police Commander, Denis Namuwoza says that the suspect has already been arrested. Namuwoza also says that the suspect shot out of fear, though eyewitnesses claim that he was under the influence of alcohol.
